Shining a Bright Light on the Shadow World of RV LED’s

The promise of LED’s was a simple one, a way forward in a concept that had really not evolved much in the 130 plus years since Edison. LED’s promised a technologically advanced, bright, clean, energy efficient light. Pretty straight forward.

Turns out incandescent lights couldn’t, and LED’s, the semiconductors of the future, were here to kick their cans.

And a few of the pioneers in the RV LED industry, with a passion in mind and a fire in the belly vowed to make them better, brighter and more inexpensive to the consumer as the future rose before us. Giddy days.

I saw it all clearly. As I sat under my own lighting designs illuminating my drafting table, I crafted my own manifesto; simple as the bulbs and boards I was creating. Great Light. Great Prices.

What I failed to see, lurking in the shadows, was an industry focused on a quick buck, a good old boys club that put profit ahead of their patrons. Astoundingly, some of the LED bulbs being distributed throughout the RV industry today, the first generation bulbs, were designed over 8 years ago. Dinosaurs to be certain.

All well and good until you realize that with the advancements of LED’s in the last 12 months alone, it is now possible to shine more lumens per watt with less energy expenditure and that ratio continues to blossom.

Readily abundant light that’s easier on your eyes, your batteries and your bank account is what we should all expect and demand from RV LED industry distributors.

A little over a year ago I “retired” from a well known RV LED light manufacturer where I created, designed and brought to market the first ever RV motion sensor light, the SL1000.

I had reached the tipping point with industry shenanigans.

Today, at my own company, Gregg Wilson Designs, we continue to push the creative envelop in all things LED. We bypass the normal and archaic means of distribution and sales in big box stores, so that we can pass on to our clients—those avid RVer’s and dry campers of all shapes and sizes—the savings normally gobbled up by the middle man in the supply chain.

We also decided early on, to tell the truth about the “hours” of LED life. Given the evolution of LED’s, there is no reason to mislead the consumer with claims of “longest lasting bulb” on the market. All hype, no honesty.

So welcome to our blog, the no BS zone when comes to all things RV LED. This is where the demystification dawns and the shadows exposed.

We’re proud to have a simple mission statement; Innovating Illumination one LED at a time.
